As Christmas approaches, the debate over fish on the festive table reignites: should fish be on the holiday table, or should it be skipped this year. Nevertheless, according to statistics, there is hardly a Hungarian household at Christmas where some fish dish is not on the table. It seems that tradition, supply, and conscious choice are stronger than the objections. The roots of Christmas fish consumption go deep into Christian culture. Traditionally, Christmas Eve was a fasting day when meaty foods were on the forbidden list, while fish was considered permissible. Additionally, fish became a symbol of abundance, luck, and progress in folk beliefs, which superstitions connected to fish scales keep alive to this day.
