Brazil's beer industry has seen a surge in growth, with a record 1,383 breweries registered in 2020, marking a 14.4% increase from the previous year. This growth is driven by the rising production of craft beers, which require higher quality hops for their brewing process. Currently, Brazil imports nearly all of its hops, but there has been a push towards domestic production to reduce costs for breweries and provide more income for family farmers. A collaborative project between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Inter-American Institute of Cooperation for Agriculture aims to identify opportunities for hop production and develop a feasibility plan. Preliminary surveys show that around 42 hectares are already cultivated for hop production, with Santa Catarina state leading the effort.
