Belarus has imposed an embargo on food imports from the EU, UK, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, North Macedonia, Albania, the U.S. and Canada, effective from Dec. 6. The embargo includes fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, and confectionery, but not seeds. The ban is expected to impact around 400,000 to 500,000 metric tons of fresh produce exported from the EU, primarily apples, pears, strawberries, and tomatoes. The European fresh produce sector, represented by Freshfel Europe, has expressed deep concerns about the implications of the embargo and the challenges faced by the sector due to SPS hurdles, protectionism, and new COVID constraints.
