Belarus has introduced maximum selling and retail prices for six fruit and vegetable products, including potatoes, cabbage, carrots, beets, onions, and apples, from January to May 2022, as part of a new price regulation decree. The decree aims to protect the domestic market, prioritize Belarusian produce, and account for the outpacing price growth in other countries. However, experts caution that price regulation can lead to the creation of a shadow market and profit unprofitability for manufacturers. Additionally, a ban on the import of fresh products, primarily apples, pears, strawberries, and tomatoes, from the European Union and other countries, introduced on December 6, 2021, could result in a potential loss of €300 million for manufacturers.
