A new European Union regulation, Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/1399, amends the maximum levels of red roundworm spores and ergot alkaloids in certain foodstuffs. The regulation lowers the maximum levels of red roundworm spores for unprocessed cereals, except for rye, maize, and rice. It also sets maximum levels for ergot alkaloids in foodstuffs like barley, wheat, spelled, and oats. The regulation, effective from 1 January 2022, aims to protect certain population groups and can be achieved through good agricultural practices, sorting, and cleaning techniques.
