Between 2020 and 2021, the average consumer price of several foodstuffs subject to price caps saw significant increases before the caps were implemented. According to the article, sunflower cooking oil experienced the highest price increase at 51%, followed by wheat flour (33%), and granulated sugar (24%). However, pasteurized 2.5% ESL milk saw a more modest increase of 14%. Interestingly, the price of pork thighs decreased by 12% during the same period. On January 13, 2021, the Hungarian government announced a price cap on several food items, including granulated sugar, wheat flour, sunflower oil, chicken breast fillets, and 2.5% cow’s milk, returning them to October 2021 levels, with the caps in effect from February 1, 2021, until May 1, 2021.
