China's walnut exports experienced a significant increase in 2021, with the value of exports rising by 60%. The country achieved record levels in both shell and kernel exports, with kernels doubling to 45-47 thousand tons and shells increasing by about 1.5 times to 110-115 thousand tons. This resulted in a Walnut export revenue of approximately $420 million for the year. Due to these strong performances, China is on track to rank third globally among walnut exporters, surpassing Chile and Ukraine, despite the latter's challenges. The United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan emerged as the top buyers, with the UAE showing the most significant growth. Notably, Turkey, which previously relied on Ukrainian walnuts, has shifted its preference to Chinese walnuts, contributing to a 2.2-fold increase in imports. Iraq, Vietnam, and Saudi Arabia rounded out the list of the fastest-growing markets for Chinese walnuts.
