Chinese authorities in Qinghai and Gansu provinces will investigate the planting and processing of goji berries following a report that farmers used chemicals to enhance their appearance. A special task force will conduct overnight inspections and those found responsible will be severely punished. The investigation will find that some farmers added sodium metabisulfite or industrial sulfur during production, and sulfur was used to cut costs in Jingyuan. These treatments were found in products sold to restaurants, pharmacies, and used to make goji berry wine.
