Despite a record-breaking year for dairy product imports, which saw a growth from 2019 but a decrease from 2017 and 2018, Colombia's trade balance for powdered milk and other dairy derivatives is heavily in deficit. The country imported over 65,000 tonnes and exported only 3,000 tonnes in the first ten months of 2020, leading to a significant imbalance. This situation is particularly noticeable when compared to the previous years, which experienced more favorable sales. The increase in imports in 2020 is attributed to a more favorable production and stockpiling situation due to better rainfall, although the year still does not rank highly for domestic market yields. The United States is the primary destination for these imports, but Colombia has also imported over 36,000 tonnes from the country, accounting for 39% of shipments.
