Conventional vine tomatoes last season were more expensive than organic in Spain

Conventional tomatoes on the vine sold more expensively than organic ones in Spain in 2021/2022, according to calculations by the Spanish news service Hortoinfo based on data from the Andalusian Observatory for Prices and Markets. With a price of € 1.09 per kilo, the conventional vine tomato was 4.8% more expensive than the € 1.04 per kilo of the organic variety. For plum tomatoes, both price averages were roughly unequal. € 0.75 per kilo was paid for the conventional product (50% more than last season) and € 0.77 per kilo for the organic plum tomato. The most relevant variety in organic tomato cultivation is the cherry tomato, which retains its price advantage compared to the conventional product, although the gap has been narrowing in recent years. In 2021/2022, the price of organic cherry tomatoes was €1.60 per kilo, 14.3% more than the conventional product, whose average price was €1.40 per kilo.
