(Danyang=Yonhap News) Reporter Park Byeong-gi = On the 6th, the Danyang County in North Chungcheong announced that it has been selected for the Rural Development Administration's "2026 Technology Dissemination Branding Collaboration Model Project" and will embark on making its garlic a premium product.
The project aims to enhance the competitiveness of local agriculture based on a research, guidance, and private cooperation system centered around agricultural technology centers.
Danyang County plans to invest 1 billion won, including government funds, by 2027 to establish a year-round production base for hydroponic garlic seedlings and green garlic.
This technology involves securing large, high-quality garlic seeds and producing green garlic in the form of leaf vegetables from garlic that lacks commercial value.
Danyang County Mayor Kim Mun-geun said, "Through this project, we will establish a stable production and year-round shipment system for Danyang garlic" and "We will spare no support for the premiumization of Danyang garlic."
Danyang garlic, grown in highland loess fields, is known for its strong, crisp taste and good storage, making it more expensive than garlic from other regions.
Around 1,000 farms in the area (283 hectares) produce approximately 2,800 tons of garlic annually.
