Inshore harvesters in western Newfoundland, represented by FFAW-Unifor, are calling for changes to the management of the Unit 1 redfish fishery in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The harvesters are struggling to access the small quota due to deep-sea fishing restrictions set by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), which prevent them from targeting the fish they can see on sonar. These depth restrictions, along with the majority of the redfish quota being allocated to offshore trawlers, are pushing the inshore fleet towards financial ruin. FFAW-Unifor is urging the DFO to adjust the minimum fishing depth to align with the current location of the redfish stocks, and to recognize the bycatch management protocols already in place by inshore harvesters.
