South Korea to dispose temporary protection rights for Halla Green and Samda Green to promote regular implementation

[Reporter Kang Jae-nam, Korea Rural Newspaper] The Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services (Director Koh Sang-hwan) announced that it would dispose of the temporary protection rights for new varieties of broccoli ‘Hallagreen’ and ‘Samdagreen’ developed last year and promote regular implementation. According to the Urban Farming Institute, the area for broccoli cultivation in Jeju is 1,171 hectares, and the production is 18,360 tons, accounting for 72% of the nation's total. However, the dependence on foreign seeds reaches 99%, and the burden of management costs on growers is increasing due to the increase in seed prices every year. Urbanong Kiwon started developing broccoli varieties in 2006 and fostered New Tamragrin in 2017 and Hallagreen and Samdagreen in 2022.
