The Poultry Product Council (BTT) and the National Chamber of Agricultural Economy (NAK), along with the Association of European Poultry Processors and Traders (AVEC), have expressed strong opposition to the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) recommendations on animal welfare conditions for chickens and laying hens, stating that they fail to consider the potential environmental, economic, and social implications. They argue that these recommendations could lead to the production of food that is more expensive, in smaller quantities, with a greater environmental impact, and at a higher risk to food safety. They are particularly concerned about the potential ban of the EU-compliant cage system and the proposal to drastically reduce the stocking density of broiler chickens, which they believe would create unsustainable conditions for animal husbandry.
