Research from the Flemish ILVO institute in Belgium, led by Marta Lourenço, has shown that field beans with grain can completely replace soybean meal in organic feed for laying hens. The study, which compared five treatments, found that silage beans were effective in reducing anti-nutritional factors found in legumes. However, not all soybean meal could be replaced, as the feed would become too moist. The research also indicated that fermenting only field beans and using unpickled horse beans as a substitute for soybean meal were less attractive options due to lower crude protein digestion. The study is part of Belgium's efforts to find alternative regional protein sources for laying hens, also exploring fodder peas as a protein source in a mixed crop with other grains. Other processing methods like toasting or extrusion will also be explored in a separate project.
