The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) in Brazil has introduced a new rule for the marketing of ground beef. The rule, applicable to companies registered with the Federal Inspection Service (SIF) and the Brazilian Inspection System for Products of Animal Origin (Sisbi-POA), mandates that ground beef should be packaged immediately after grinding and that each package should not weigh more than 1 kilo. The rule also prohibits the obtaining of ground meat from the grinding of meat from bones or any other mechanical separation processes of bones or beef offals such as liver and kidneys. The rule does not impact the sale of ground beef in supermarkets and butchers. The veterinary doctor at Indea/MT, Fernanda Rocco, clarified that leaving ground meat exposed on the refrigerated counter has never been allowed, regardless of the new MAPA norm.
