During the early days of Ramadan in 2023, the surge in fish prices has reached unprecedented levels, affecting the affordability of seafood for many. The cost of sardines has escalated to between 15 and 25 dirhams per kilogram, while more luxurious fish such as mousa, Merlin, al-Qaimron, and calamar have seen prices soar to over 100 dirhams per kilogram for some varieties. This price hike occurs against a backdrop of economic challenges for citizens, exacerbated by high prices for essentials like vegetables, fruits, red meat, and poultry. Despite these challenges, demand for fish has remained relatively low due to the overall high cost of living during Ramadan.
