The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan is consulting with the Food Safety Commission on the health impact of BASF's DHA production and genetically modified herbicide-resistant rapeseed, LBFLFK. The rapeseed is engineered to produce DHA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid, by incorporating genes from other organisms. The product is used to produce canola oil and the waste is used as livestock feed. The DHA production and LBFLFK GM rapeseed have been approved for food, feed, and cultivation in Canada and the United States, but not for feed in the United States. The Ministry of Agriculture, Labor and Welfare in Japan has found no safety issues as feed and considers there is no risk to health.
