Sancheong-gun in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea has started shipping 'fresh-oiled strawberries' with a freshness retention agent packaging, thanks to a pilot project. The agent, a desiccant, extends the strawberries' freshness by about three days. The Military Agricultural Center and local strawberry farms are involved in the packaging and shipping of the agent. The product has received positive responses from retailers and consumers due to its longer storage period and higher retail prices. A 100 million won project is planned next year to expand the shipment of strawberries with the freshness maintenance system. Sancheong-gun Agricultural Technology Center anticipates that this will boost the competitiveness of Sancheong strawberries from Jirisan.
