The Thai Ministry of Commerce is taking steps to support garlic farmers by ensuring they receive fair prices for their produce, particularly during the upcoming season in February and March when a large harvest is expected. The ministry is negotiating with private buyers and farmers' groups to sell garlic at a recommended price of 13.50 baht per kilogram, higher than the 8 baht per kilogram being offered. Additionally, farmers will have access to low-interest loans and stricter enforcement against garlic smuggling. The ministry is also developing high-quality garlic varieties and promoting organic cultivation. The annual garlic yield is approximately 80,000 tons, with 170,000 tons for domestic consumption and imports making up the difference.
