Greece has approached the European Union for emergency financial aid due to severe weather conditions that have significantly impacted olive production in the country. The adverse effects of spring frost, heatwaves, and drought during the crucial flowering and fruiting period have led to a drastic reduction in olive crops, with some areas experiencing a loss of 70% to 90% of the expected production. The affected regions include Crete, Lesvos, Euboea, southern Peloponnese, Fokida, Fthiotida, and Halkidiki. The request for aid follows similar requests from countries like Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, which have sought compensation after flooding damaged their agricultural sectors.
