A recent study by the Hellenic Vegetarian Union (HellasVeg) in Greece reveals that the country has the highest meat consumption among 11 European countries, with 73% of consumers eating up to 3.3 kg of meat per month. Despite this, 49% of Greeks want to reduce their meat intake. The study also found that 82% of meat eaters agree that there are good reasons to become a vegetarian, with animal treatment being the most important. The president of the Greek Association of Vegetarians predicts that vegetarianism will increase in Greece due to the pandemic, the climate crisis, and the desire for fairer treatment of animals. The study also highlighted the need for improving and making plant-based products more available and affordable to make them more appealing to consumers.
