South Korea: Halal certification will be required for imported foods into Indonesia starting this October

Starting October 17 this year, food imported into Indonesia must obtain Halal certification. Halal means permitted by Sharia, Islamic law. Halal certified products in Indonesia are recognized by the Indonesian Halal Certification Agency (BPJPH). Obtaining halal certification is essential to distribute food in Indonesia, where more than 87% of the total population is estimated to be Muslim. According to data from the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), as the Indonesian government regulations announced in February 2021 mandate halal certification across distribution, transaction, and storage services within Indonesian territory, imported food will be subject to a deadline of October 17, 2024. Afterwards, it is mandatory to obtain Halal certification. According to the Indonesian Halal Certification Agency, as of January 12, 2024, more than 3.5 million products have obtained halal certification, with the second largest number of Korean products after China.
