European beekeepers are experiencing a significant drop in honey yields, with a 40% decrease in 2020, leading to a forecasted production decline and potential shortage of certain honey types across the European Union. This is due to unfavorable climatic conditions and market distortions, exacerbated by heavy rain and floods in central and eastern Europe, and a severe drought in July. The situation is expected to worsen, impacting the survival of 10 million hives in the EU and affecting ecosystem services. The Copa Cogeca Honey Working Group is calling for urgent measures, including risk management and promotion of European products, indication of honey origin, and stricter controls on imports to address the crisis and ensure the sustainability of the sector.
