Italy: In the first quarter of 2023, there is a boom in the import of milk in tanks

Imports of milk in tankers in Italy in the period January-April 2023 recorded a strong growth (+76.1% in volume), interrupting the negative trend of recent years. This was announced by Ismea in the latest report on the trends and dynamics of the dairy sector. In particular, also in consideration of cheaper supplies, Germany has repositioned itself in the historic role of first supplier (in 2022 this role had been covered by Slovenia), thanks to shipments to Italy that practically quadrupled in the period. There was a sharp decline in milk tanks from France (-19% in volume), also as a result of a still declining production beyond the Alps. At the same time, deliveries of cow's milk in Italy continue to remain below last year's levels and, according to Agea data, the decline recorded in the first four months of 2023 is equal to 2.6%.
