In Turkey, the buffalo population is under threat.

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) Faculty of Agriculture Department of Agricultural Economics Lecturer Assoc. Dr. Bakiye Kılıç Topuz stated that despite significant increases in the global water buffalo population and water buffalo milk production, Turkey has seen a serious decline, with Turkey being the country where the water buffalo population is decreasing the fastest in the world. Assoc. Dr. Bakiye Kılıç, stating that they evaluated data from the past 30 years, said, "While the global water buffalo population increased by 34 percent, in Turkey this rate decreased by 53 percent. As a result of our analyses, we can say that the water buffalo population is under serious threat."
