The Agreste report projects that the French fresh market tomato harvest in 2024 will reach 475.5 thousand tons, marking a 5% increase from the previous year but a 6% decrease compared to the five-year average. Despite a slight delay in the season's start, production peaked in June, only to experience a decline in September due to adverse weather conditions. The demand also saw a dip in September, leading to higher prices for regular tomatoes but lower prices for cherry and cocktail tomatoes due to strong import competition, primarily from Morocco. From January to September 2024, tomato exports increased by 4%, while imports surged by 11%, contributing to a 22% increase in the foreign trade deficit compared to 2023.
