The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is contemplating recognizing 17 European food products with protected geographical indicators, including five types of extra virgin olive oils from four EU countries, ham, cheese, seasoning, sausage, bread and hops. The ministry is accepting public comments on the issue until November before forming an expert committee to make a decision. Products with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) or Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) are valued at approximately €75 billion annually in Europe, with extra virgin olive oils making up €277 million of that total.
