The Jeonnam Institute of Agricultural Technology (Director Kim Haeng-ran) has scientifically proven that oil extracted from brown mealworms, an edible insect, possesses various functionalities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin whitening properties. They have successfully developed prototype cosmetics and food products utilizing this oil. Brown mealworms are a representative edible insect registered as a food ingredient and are primarily used in various foods in the form of protein powder. However, the insect oil generated during the milking process is mostly discarded, resulting in low utilization. To address this, the Jeonnam Institute of Agricultural Technology's Insect Sericulture Research Institute has consistently pursued research on functional verification and product development to create added value from the discarded insect oil.
