The Ministry of Agriculture has defended its agricultural policies against criticism from the head of the Jordan Exporters and Producers Association for Fruit and Vegetables (JEPA), stating that its goal is to protect local production, prevent monopolies, and ensure consumer protection. To achieve this, the ministry regulates imports to balance market needs with local interests and has suspended garlic and potato imports to boost domestic production. While lemon imports have been halted due to direct competition, African lemons are still allowed due to higher costs. A shipment of peaches from South Africa was imported despite the end of the import period due to shipping delays, but the ministry insists it will not lead to an oversupply.
