(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Ahn Yong-soo = In preparation for the kimchi-making season starting in mid-next month, the government has decided to take action to ensure smooth supply of kimchi ingredients during the peak season, including production management and securing quantities.
Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryeong visited cabbage fields in Goesan County, North Chungcheong Province, the main production area for kimchi cabbage, on the 26th to directly check the crop conditions ahead of the kimchi-making season.
This was to assess the local situation as diseases such as wilting have occurred in areas with early planting or poor drainage due to the recent autumn rains.
However, the area for autumn cabbage cultivation has increased by 2.5% compared to last year, and with the recent improvement in weather conditions, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs expects that there will be no major issues with cabbage supply during the peak kimchi-making season from mid-November to December.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs plans to strengthen the management of growth for stable supply and demand of major vegetables such as cabbage and radish.
To this end, it will promote growth monitoring, cultivation technology guidance, and expansion of pesticide and nutrient supply together with the Rural Development Administration, local governments, and agricultural cooperatives.
In order to preemptively address supply insecurity due to abnormal weather, the government will also take action to secure quantities.
It plans to expand contracted cultivation and secure the maximum amount of government-purchased reserves and outgoing-controlled quantities to quickly supply to wholesale markets and major demand sites in the event of a supply shortage.
Minister Song said, "As temperatures are expected to drop significantly from next week, thorough preparation is necessary," and "Please make all-out efforts to strengthen growth management support against abnormal weather to ensure stable production and supply of kimchi cabbage."
