The James Hutton Institute's Quikgro research project has developed five new potato varieties that are climate- and disease-resistant, and have been approved for cultivation in Malawi by the Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Resources. These varieties, Chikoka, Chiture, Khutula, Phindu and Tinyadile, are high yielding, quick to cook, and have optimal tuber size, shape, texture, taste, and flesh color. They are also resistant to late blight, viruses, and bacterial wilting, which allows for an environmentally friendly harvest. The institute plans to educate farmers and stakeholders about the benefits of growing these new varieties.
