Nigeria, the third largest onion producer in Africa and seventh largest worldwide, is struggling with price instability and availability of onions due to a lack of storage facilities. The absence of improved storage facilities is leading to significant post-harvest losses and price fluctuations. Despite these challenges, there is potential for profit in onion farming and exportation, particularly to the European Union and the United States. The National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN) and other stakeholders are advocating for modern storage solutions and value addition to enhance the industry's profitability and reduce losses. A new onion and garlic flakes processing plant in Sokoto, funded by Onion and Garlic Processing Partnership Limited (O&G company), is set to mitigate the post-harvest loss issue.
