The Ministry of Agriculture in Indonesia has recommended the individual, identified as the recipient, to become a distributor of nutmeg seeds across the country. Nutmeg, a spice that has been cultivated on the Banda Islands for centuries, was previously managed poorly under a profit-sharing system and was not fully owned by the community. However, in 2010, management practices changed and land ownership issues were not specified. In 2019, the Central Statistics Agency reported that 1,211 families were involved in nutmeg cultivation, covering 382 hectares and producing 922.5 tonnes. The article also highlights the struggle of Pongky Irwandi Van Den Broeke, a 13th generation nutmeg plantation owner, who has been reduced from controlling 140 hectares to just 12.5 hectares due to the Indonesian government's reclamation of land.
