The European Commission forecasts a slight increase in the consumption of fresh peaches and nectarines within the EU, rising from 5.9 kg per capita in 2021 to 6.1 kg in 2022. This growth is attributed to an increase in production, favorable weather conditions, and the recovery of tourism. However, this increase is lower than the average consumption of the past five years. The EU's total production of peaches and nectarines is projected to increase by 3% to 3.4 million tonnes, despite a significant drop from Spain due to adverse weather. Despite the increase in production, EU exports of these fruits are expected to remain stable at around 140,000 tons, while imports from third countries are predicted to rise by 11%, totaling 47,000 tons in 2022.
