Peruvian Chia: A booming agro-export potential

Peruvian chia has great agro-export potential, with ample opportunities to expand its network of destinations and develop its domestic production. In July 2024, Peru exported 249 tons worth $875,000, representing an increase of 98.4% in value and 124.4% in volume compared to the same month in 2023. According to FreshFruit, despite the growth in volume, the average price was $3.51 per kilogram, 11.6% less than the previous year. Peruvian chia reached 17 destinations in July, surpassing the 14 of last year. The main markets were Thailand, with a share of 36.2%; Canada, with 11.9%; and France, with 9.4%. Thailand imported 100 tons for $316,000 at an average price of $3.17 per kilogram.
