Romania is facing a severe shortage of pork for Christmas due to the extreme measures taken to control the African swine fever epidemic. These measures have effectively eradicated pork production in small farms, leaving the country reliant on imports for 70% of its pork consumption. The epidemic has resulted in the culling of hundreds of thousands of pigs, with many experts believing that a significant number of these pigs were not actually infected with the disease. The industry has capacity for 3.6 million fattening pigs, but the current herd is only a quarter of this. The proposed fourth version of an emergency regulation by the Ministry of Agriculture would further restrict pig keeping, and a bill in parliament aims to distinguish between small farm pork production and industrial pig farming.
