In the first half of the year, 9,997 tons of lemons produced in the San Lorenzo, Chira, and Chulucanas valleys of Piura, Sullana, and Morropón regions in Peru, were certified for export by SENASA. This represents a slight decrease from the 12,608 tons certified in 2020. The main export market for Piura lemons is Chile, accounting for over 70% of the demand, with Panama, England, the Netherlands, the United States, and the Dominican Republic also being significant markets. The export success of Piura lemons is attributed to the collaborative efforts of all actors in the production chain, which includes constant phytosanitary surveillance to protect the crop from pests like Huanglongbing (HLB) and providing guidance to small producers on preventive measures. This industry is vital to the economy of the Piura region, providing economic dynamism and contributing to the development of over 10,000 family farmers.
