The Puglia region in southern Italy has seen a significant increase in pomegranate cultivation, with a 1400% growth in production over the past five years, occupying more than 1000 hectares up from 67 hectares. This surge has led to a 35% rise in consumption, making Puglia a major contributor to Italy's pomegranate production, with the province of Tarento accounting for 40% of the national output. The region's preference is for the Akko and Wonderful varieties, known for their high yield and quality. This revival has garnered interest from supermarkets, however, the market faces potential competition from countries like Israel and Spain, which also have a strong pomegranate cultivation tradition in the Mediterranean basin.
