Wageningen Livestock Research has conducted a study on the family feeding principle in pig farming, which involves piglets learning to eat and drink from the sow. The study, commissioned by Vereijken, Trouw Nutrition, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, found that this eating system has a positive effect on the weaning weight and behavior of piglets. It helps piglets consume solid feed before weaning, reducing the number of piglets that do not by 10% compared to the control eating system. However, the family eating system does not influence growth, feed intake, or final weight over the entire piglet rearing period.
