Global prices for chicken meat will continue to rise in 2022

In December 2021, the global average price of chicken peaked at $2.74 per kg, up 17% from the previous month. The average annual price is projected to rise from $2.26/kg last year to $2.30/kg in 2022. According to a recently released IndexBox report, the average annual price of chicken is up 38% year-on-year to $2.26/kg in 2021. Rising feed costs, combined with high logistics costs, are pushing up meat prices. At the same time, global production remained stable compared to the 2020 level of 120 million tons. While global chicken meat production is projected to rise to 121 million tonnes this year, chicken prices will continue to rise, driven by growing demand. In 2022, the average annual price of chicken meat is projected to increase by 2% compared to last year to $2.30 per kg. The expected decline in the number of cattle, especially in the EU and the US, will stimulate demand for beef substitutes, including poultry.
