For the first time in 25 years, anchovies from Georgia failed to arrive in Trabzon, Turkey, resulting in a surge in prices. The absence of anchovies, due to thin numbers in both Georgian waters and the Black Sea, has negatively impacted the price ceiling. Recep Denizer, the owner of Denizer Balikcilik, remains hopeful for a plentiful season next year, attributing the current thin numbers to changes in the anchovy's genes and water temperature. In the meantime, anchovies have become a luxury food, driving up prices, and bonito has been abundant, helping to make up for the shortfall.
