The avocado industry is under pressure to improve environmental and human rights conditions due to increasing demand, particularly in the Western world. Unfortunately, this demand has led to negative environmental impacts and human rights abuses in avocado-growing regions, including deforestation, illegal farming, and risks to farmers who speak out. In response, organizations like Fair Trade USA™ are implementing strict standards to promote sustainability and fair working conditions. These standards include no deforestation and minimized impact on protected areas. Partnerships between Fair Trade USA™, retailers, and distributors, such as Whole Foods Market and Grupo Aguacatero los Cerritos, are aiming to certify more farms and improve the lives of farmers. Additionally, the government of Michoacán is introducing a voluntary certification process to encourage good practices in avocado cultivation, without deforestation, and to provide environmental responsibility in export practices.
