A study by Malaysia's Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has found that the average production cost for chicken was RM6.53 per kg and RM48 cent per egg in September. The average retail price for chicken was RM9.08 per kg, with margins at wholesale and retail levels, while eggs retailed at 54 sen per egg with similar margins. The government set a ceiling price of RM9.40 per kg of chicken from July 1 to address concerns of margin narrowing or losses due to increased production costs. The study found that poultry feed and purchasing costs of day-old chicks were the largest contributors to the production costs for chicken and eggs, respectively.
