The National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA) of Peru is increasing oversight of organic product exports in response to potential new European Union (EU) restrictions. These restrictions would require each shipment to be accompanied by an 'organic' certificate and proof of transaction, with random testing for pesticide residues. The EU has not yet officially announced these measures, but SENASA is taking proactive steps to comply, including increased auditing of certification bodies and an Annual Monitoring of Chemical Residues in Organic Products. The EU's proposal also covers 21 other countries and various organic products, including Peruvian avocados, bananas, cocoa beans, limes, and mangoes.
