Senegal, a country that heavily uses onions in its cuisine, imports half of its annual supply, primarily from the Netherlands. In an effort to protect local growers and the onion industry, the government has decided to ban the import of foreign onions until their local stock runs out. The annual production is 450,000 tons, with half being imported.
