South Korea's Jeollanam-do Sinan-gun county is taking steps to boost the competitiveness of its luxury spinach brand, 'seomcho', by mechanizing its cultivation, production, and shipment processes. This initiative aims to address concerns over declining cultivation areas due to labor shortages caused by an aging rural population and the ongoing pandemic. The county has automated the entire process from sowing to shipping, introducing customized agricultural equipment and reducing reliance on manual labor, with expectations to cut harvesting labor by over 90% and boost yield by more than 30%. The goal is to increase the shipment volume of washed spinach in small packages to make it more accessible to consumers.
