Sicilian dairy farmers are facing financial losses due to increased production costs and drought, leading to a potential collapse of the milk system in south-eastern Sicily. The cost of feed, fertilizers, fuels, and energy have all risen, and the current selling price of milk is not covering these costs. In response, cooperatives representing over half of Sicily's cow's milk production have called for a price adjustment for raw milk at the stable, starting at 48 euro cents per liter from October 1st, with the possibility of reduction if feed and energy costs decrease. They are also seeking support for animal welfare and milk quality improvement programs, and the establishment of a National and Regional Observatory to monitor production prices for corporate sustainability.
