A letter to Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture expresses concerns over the decision to exempt the import of whey protein, a move that could severely harm the national production chain, increase cheese prices, and decrease milk producers' pay. The decision could also stifle new investments in the country. Since 2014, Rio Grande do Sul has invested over R$ 1 billion in the production of whey protein, with the potential to generate lactose in the process. The majority of Brazil's whey protein imports come from the United States and Argentina. The request for privileged tax treatment for imported production could make local production of this high-value product unprofitable. The issue has been referred to the Ministry of Economy and the Secretariat of Government for further consideration.
