Over 100 small farmers in Chile have received more than $950 million pesos in compensation for losses caused by untimely frosts that affected their tobacco crops. The farmers, located in the O'Higgins, Maule, Ñuble and Biobío regions, had timely agricultural insurance with a state subsidy from Agroseguros, which covered over 1,000 hectares. The payments were made in September and October, with the assistance of the Ministry of Agriculture and British American Tobacco Chile Operations S.A. The ministry emphasized the importance of agricultural insurance, especially with climate change increasing the likelihood of crop damage, and noted that farmers who contracted insurance through BAT received better coverage for tobacco drying.
